A cisgender person is someone who, according to gender-identity ideology, has an inner “gender identity” that matches the sex they were born with. Detransitioners, however, overwhelmingly reject this framing. They point out that the label implies most people possess a happy, innate “gender identity” that aligns with stereotypes, when in reality ordinary women and men simply live in their female or male bodies without any such inner sense. Many say the word “cis” is used to create a false binary—treating non-trans people as stereotypical, perfectly content “NPCs” who never question gender—while erasing the common, transient dysphoria that many people feel. Some detransitioners will pragmatically accept “cis” only as shorthand for “not transitioning,” but emphasize it is a negation, not an identity. Others refuse the term entirely, viewing it as an ideological or even hostile label that misrepresents their lived experience.
